My Story
Story of a graphic designer and video editor who learned by doing:
I've always been a visual learner. I learn best by seeing things and then trying to recreate them myself. This is how I've learned most of my skills, both in my personal and professional life.
When I was learning to design graphics, I didn't just read a book or take a course. I started by looking at other people's designs and trying to figure out how they were made. I would then try to recreate those designs myself. I made mistakes, but I learned from them. And eventually, I became a better designer.
The same is true for video editing. I didn't just watch tutorials or read articles. I started by editing small videos that challenged me. I made mistakes, but I learned from them. And eventually, I became a better editor.
I believe that the best way to learn any skill is by doing. You need to force yourself to perform. You need to put yourself in situations where you have to use your skills. And you need to be willing to make mistakes.
Of course, this doesn't mean that you should never take courses or read books. There is a lot of valuable information that can be learned from these sources. But I believe that the best way to learn is by doing.
"You need a force to perform and a cause to learn."
The Power of Tacit Knowledge
One of the benefits of learning by doing is that you gain tacit knowledge. Tacit knowledge is knowledge that is difficult to codify or express in words. It is the knowledge that is gained through experience and practice.
For example, let's say you're learning to play the guitar. You can read books and watch videos that teach you the basics of guitar playing. But you won't truly become a good guitarist until you start practicing and playing the guitar yourself.
As you practice, you will develop tacit knowledge about the guitar. You will learn how to hold the guitar, how to strum the strings, and how to play different chords. You will also learn how to improvise and create your own music.
This tacit knowledge is incredibly valuable. It is the knowledge that allows you to perform at a high level. And it is the knowledge that you can't learn from books or videos.
So if you're looking to learn graphic design or video editing, don't just sit back and read a book. Get out there and start performing. Force yourself to use your skills. And be willing to make mistakes. You will gain tacit knowledge that will help you become a better designer or editor.
Here are some tips for learning by doing:
- Start with small projects that challenge you.
- Don't be afraid to make mistakes.
- Learn from your mistakes.
- Be patient and persistent.
- Don't give up.
